What kind of mods can i do on my stock speed density engine, can i do an intake manifold swap, headers, roller rocker, SD Cam stuff like that? The engine is a 94 Ford E-150 Van with the 5.8l Windsor.
This summer I ported my heads, put headers (shorties), and roller rockers with a 1.7 ratio vs 1.6 (cheap cam change) and passed CA smog. I have a 94 302. Conaski knows what he is talking about and will direct you in the right direction. Just becareful that the cam has a duration of 110 degree, again ask Conaski.....
Note of warning if you are in CA you need to check that the CARB number matches the year of your vehicle. An example is the 1.7 rockers were certified for 92 302 but crane did not apply for cert. thru 1995 so my 94 was not "CARB" certified. Of course if the vavle covers are on.....
I went with the shorties and they work well - I would say a 10% increase in flow/power - a guess at best. A lot of people will recommend long tube verse the shorties but the difference in gain is not the great. I believe Conaski has a side by side comparision chart. The one thing I learned (relearned I should say) is that headers don't fit perfectly and will need to be gently modified (hammer and punch) to fit. I found the clearance between the nuts/studs were a little close so I had to custom fit the headers. Not a big deal but the headers were in and out of the truck a bunch of times. Also getting ceramic headers was a waste since the ceramic at the "custom" fit areas was knocked off - so stainless steel is the way to go. After the headers were in I had to go to a muffler shop to have my exhaust cut and widened to fit the shorties. I purchased flowtech headers - not complaining I actually like them but I would recommend to check and see what people have say about fit and installation effort.
