Leaking Fluid

Hey ya'll my 1997 4.6 4x4 f150 developed its first leak recenlty (with 235,000 miles on it). Fluid comes out of where the driveshaft goes in to the transfer case. The fluid is a dirty milky color and it is viscous like engine oil just maybe a little less. The engine oil looks fine on the dip stick, I cannot see any oil inside the coolant, and the tranny fluid is a pretty bright red color.
Is this the transfercase fluid leaking?
I am not a do it your selfer and I am just curious what may all be involved if I take it to a shop to get it fixed.

Also I have owned the truck for 7 years and every winter the oil fill cap develops a frothy dirty milky color foam (thats fairly thick) on the inside of the cap. But the oil on the dipstick always looks fine and I never see anything like that when I drain it. Could this be related or does any one have any idea on what this is?

Thanks!

Sounds like you need to replace the transfer case fluid.
As far as the leak, if you're not over filling the transfer case the seal is probably shot. Remove the driveshaft and check the yolk for a groove where the seal rides on it, if no groove on the yolk pop the old seal out and put a new one in. Put some vasoline or something on the lip of the new seal where it rides on the yolk so it doesn't get torn up from being dry the first time you drive the truck.

Oops, forgot to mention, mark the drive shaft so you can put it back in the same exact position otherwise you might end up with a balance / vibration problem.

Ha yeah no worries as I won't be doing any of this myself. . . Beyond an oil change and I'm paying somebody.
I am just curious about what all might be involved.
I'm really not wanting to dump big bucks into my truck! But don't have much of a choice.

As far as the milky fluid on your engine oil cap, it is normal. In colder months or when one doesnt drive very far, the engine doesnt get hot enough to evaporate moisture in there, so it settles on the oil cap. Perfectly normal.

Ok just got the truck back from the shop
I don't remember exactly but "rear tail seal" or something along those lines was all that was wrong. That was about 100 bucks which is awesome to me!
Also the linkages on the front sway bar were replaced and wow what a difference the truck had been floaty and drove like crap for about the last year and its amazing now, like it used to be!
Also replaced dpfe hopefully that will brink my mpg from 11-15 in city like it used to be!
All in all 430 bucks for a 235k mile truck, 6 more months w/out any more repairs and it'll sure be worth that!
