Getting to the point that im really starting to look at a turbo kit for my truck, and wondering everyones opinion on the different types and brands. ATS seems to me to be the most popular and banks a close 2nd.
To me, not really knowing anything about a turbo, im thinking the wastegated version would be the way to go, im figuring faster spool up, and the fact that you can dial the max boost, but i may be wrong. What is the main difference between the ATS kit and the version of it that Ford started using. I am also curious about what size of tubing for the up pipe and down pipe.
Anyway, just trying to get some ideas of what will work and what works best. I remember that when my roomate split his factory turbo on his 2002 SD 7.3 we pulled one off a DT466 and everyone told us it wouldnt work... the power improvement was noticable immediately. I have even considered using two stock volvo turbochargers (223 cid diesels) that i could get cheap from a friend of mine, problem would be having to build the system from the ground up. Also he was saying that you can only squeeze around 8-9 pounds of boost from them... on the volvo anyway. Dont mean to be a copycat Dave, but your build on your engine seems like a nice place to start. So i want to build a kit that will work on my finished engine even though its just a stock 7.3 in there at the moment. Here's what im planning: a 6.9 bored 30 over. Shot-peened, polished, and balanced bottom end. 7.3 rockers, turbo valves, ceramic coated pistons. I will also do some head work... pocket porting and port matching at least. Looking into a program that is designed to "bore out" stock manifolds ( cant remember the name). As far as CR, ballpark 20.5-1 boost numbers around 20 pounds. And if i can find a decent deal on one or a factory take off that will fit... an intercooler. Aiming for at least 350 hp turned up an runnin the water/meth. Lemme know what you guys think.
Oh, something else i thought of... i might have asked this before and forgot, but what about a cam for these? Are there larger aftermarket ones or maybe even have one ground... Just wondering what it would do... im thinking on a forced induction engine it might not make much difference other than keep the air a little cooler.
Type four sells the only custom cam I am aware of and has definately got my interest up.
So far the people that have used them like them from what I have read. as far as turbos any of the big three is good. But from what I understand banks has already said that as soon as there equipment wears out there will be no more, which means there will be no more factory support for our application. I suspect the other two won't be far behind though. Dave also cut his pistons to get the boost he is running.

I was planning the same to get down to the 20-1 area, unless once i get the heads off and look at em i think i can unshroud the valves a little i may drop a little CR that way. Is there a wastegated ATS? or are there only non-wastegated turbos for these.
Just did a quick bing search and cant find anything out about type four. Do you have a url?
Typefour is his user name on here or it maybe type4.
Ats turbos are waistgated and so is banks. My ats isn't, but it is the first design they built for these.
ATS 085 and 088 turbos were not wastegated.
The 093 system is wastegated and was identical to the stock Ford system, until Ford re-designed the turbo outlet and downpipe.
ATS has a round 3" pipe, Ford has a smashed 2.5" downpipe.
Turbo outlet was designed for a smaller pipe size on the Ford system.
Reason was more firewall clearance.
All the smaller parts do is increase back pressure, so the turbo spools slower and can not make as much boost on top end.
ATS will have kits and make parts until their dies wear out.
Banks has already suspended parts production, as soon as the shelves are empty, no more IDI turbos.
Hypermax, I have no experience with and have never been in touch with.
