I bought a tru-cool 4739 from diesel site, I took it to my mechanic and he tells me he would not bother because I already had a large one. Well based on what i saw and read on here I wanted a second opinion. I took it to a transmission shop, dropped it off and he called me an hour later and said, I can put this one on but you already have a large one on it. He went on to talk about the heavy duty hitch and I had a heavy duty cooler with the tow package. From what I have seen on here the stock 7.3 cooler is about 8" deep. The one I have is about 18" from what I can tell. Its about 1" thick though. I was on the phone with dieselsite and he swore up and down that i have a stock one until i measured it and he said that the PO must have put that on there because that was the size of the 6.0. My question is am I looking at the right thing. I pulled back the black cover that covers the cooler. What I was looking at would be the first thing you see when you look through the grill from the outside, it has 2 lines that run into it at the top on the passenger side. I dont feel the PO would have upgraded because he never towed anything with it. How thick is the 6.0 cooler? Thankd for any advice. I just do not wantto return it and find out that I needed it all along
The stock cooler is between the IC and radiator. Look from the bottom, you will see a small cooler between them. You can also follow the lines from the bottom of the rad to the cooler. I have the tru-cooler and love it. My tru-cooler is in line with the stock cooler.
Just a note, on my 4x4 '02 model and maybe other ones as well, there is a crash bar along the bottom of the radiator support so when you look up to find the tranny cooler, the bar obstructs your view. I have to peel away the black rubber flap up top and look down between the IC and the radiator to see the tranny cooler. I know my previous truck - late '99 model - the crash bar wasn't there.
Im sorry it has been posted so much. I am no mechanic, I just read on here and try to figure out what I need. I know I will be towing a 6500# TT with it and figured I needed an extra cooler. I bought one without checking (based on the pics) and took it to a mechanic as well as a transmission guy here in town. They both told me it had a large one on it already. Their defintion of large and mine might be different. They seem to think the stock was good enough. I just want to make sure it stays cool while hauling it in the mountains. I plan on taking it back and having them install it anyway. I was not there either time they were looking at the cooler so I do not know how big mine is nor where it is located. My stock one probably is fine no more than i a pulling but i like having extra protection. My 30 DAY return was about up so I was trying to get some info. Thanks alot for the help!
