Hey i like the sound of straight through glasspacks i mean they have a rumble but i can still listen to the radio in my truck without blowing my 3 yr old daughters eardrums out
Oh i like glasspacks when they are behind a cat or 2 but straight pipe with a glasspack just ins't me.
the cat on this 5.8 ford is so big i bet if you just ran some pipe off the back of the cat it would sound good.
I appreciate all the help guys, any more pics or ideas, let em' rip.
Sorry to change the topic but I think I didn't need to start a new thread for this question. In spring, I'm getting exhaust done. I ordered a magnaflow cat with 2.5" at the ends. I'm getting 2.5" pipe all the way back after the cat and having straight pipe with a y pipe. Now, the exhaust shop here charges an arm and leg for tips. So, my question is if I have 2.5" pipe and if I order tips online I'm wanting 3.5" outlet would I need a pipe with 2.5" inlet or would it need to be smaller or larger. It seemed confusing that if it was two 2.5" pieces they would hit each other and if it was smaller or larger it wouldn't work. So will I need 2.5" inlet for tips?
In my opinon, the rolled lip tips belong on the newer body style like 97+ F150 and 99 up Chevy etc. I don't like the rolled lip nearly as much as the smooth lip like this. The older trucks on back look best with these.
Personally, I think that side exit behind the rear tires at a 45 degree angle looks best. I used to have straight out the back but I got tired of being just another truck with straight out the back duals........ So then I went back to this. The lack of a Cat and a thrush make it loud but it looks stock. Maybe I am weird..... I like it.
Here a few more pics that I took tonight. Unfortunately I had to cut the rear off to get at the fuel tank (Hijacked the Pump for my blue truck), and I can't get a great view of up front (tire is supporting the tranny).
Cool, thanks for pics..This gives me some better insight on duals..In the 7th pic it looks like both pipes go over the rear end on the passenger side but in the 9th pic it looks like the drivers side goes over the rear end on the drivers side..What gives..
Well, this is partially due to the exhaust being hacked off just after the rear axle. But back when the truck was running, just after the rear axle, the drivers side pipe made a 45° angle, then went diagonally until we used another 45° to straighten it out.
In pic #9, the exhaust is pushed to the other side of the diff, so that it wasn't in the way when I dropped the gas tank.
Well my buddy got his exhaust done on his truck (topic of this thread)
its true dual 2.5" off the manifolds with no crossover. "professional" exhaust man said this was no necessary.
no cats and flowmaster 40 mufflers. it sounds like CRAP imo. it has the flowmaster pingy/tin sound at idle and as rpm's go up it sounds EXACTLY like glasspacks or even straight pipes, raspy and cackly and has no tone..... i think its a combination of the engine being worn out to hell and no crossover (no H or X) and stock manifolds. power increase was little but hard to notice as its highly under powered already with the tires and lift that's on it.
He's finally going to listen to me and regear to 4.56 somtime this summer he said...then hopefully he'll rebuild the motor since its' beat with 230k on it. or ditch the 351 all together and get a diesel or something.
To make things better he went from 37" tires to 38" tires since this thread!!
I don't think an H or X pipe makes much difference in sound. It's supposed to equalize pressure. I wish my old truck was still running so I could put up a recording of the exhaust. Oh well, such is life.
