I have a 72 F250 and the cab is decent with exception to the floor, and one of the cab mounts underneath. I found a 70 F100 Cab in great condition for $400.......so, the questions are.......Can I swap the two cabs?.......and, is it a good idea or should I just patch what I already have?
Swap them! It is a bolt up affair. It will take as much time to swap them as cutting and welding in one cab mount (assuming you are going to replace all the rubber mounts at one time instead of just one for the bad corner). I would drain the gas tanks before doing the swap and remove them from the trucks.
I went thru the swap process a few good years ago with my 70 that I had at the time. Mounts were shot, roof was going. I purchased a nice southern cab and put it on a homemade cart(with wheels) and painted it and I switched them out one weekend.
Leave everything out of them to make it easier to pick up. I did it with two people, but four would make it real easy. The front end is just two bolt mounts and the inner fender support bolts. Unplug the wiring and lift off(remove front bumper for more room). Four bolts and the steering column unhooked and will get you near ready to remove. Unhook fuel tank lines(remove tank like mentioned) and pick off cab...or roll it off like mine . It was junk anyway. I did save my doors(take them off before removing cab to make it lighter).
I did this switching in one weekend. Its not that hard.
The only difference in the cabs, if one is building for originality, aside from the heater control differences between 67 and 68-up trucks is the location of the shoulder belt mounting holes. They were moved forward during production sometime between apr and june of 71. Oh,and there's a hole for mounting a thermostat for the emission controls on the left door hinge pillar on 70-72 cabs...I think that's all...
