Question spindles & axles

Hello all,

I not sure if this is the place to post this question but I figured who would know better than the folks on the 1967-1972 forum.
My question is two part, and is in reguard to my 1972 F-100. first; Is their an eight(8) lug axle for the ford 9inch? Second; Is their any difference between the front spindles for eight(8) lug versus five(5) lug hubs. I can't seem to find a seperate wheel bearing listing for the 8 vs 5 lug hubs, which would lead me to believe their is no spindle difference between the two. Thank you for any help you can provide.

The spindles on an F250 are a larger diameter for the wheel bearings, also require a larger diameter King pin set, hence the need for the correct set of I-Beams to mate with them. I am currently in midlle of doing a Disc conversion on my F250 , at the same time converting to a half ton. I have found the differences between my parts as I mentioned above. No where have I found however that you can put 8 bolt stuff with the 5 bolt stuff, the only option I know of at this time would be to get a wheel adapter that goes between the rim and hub and that would be made to have the 8 bolts and holes to attach to the 5 bolt hub.

Hawkeye,

What do you mean by converting to a half ton? Also will the F-250 I-beams fit the F-100 or are their frame differences?

I am converting my F250 by putting a 1/2 ton 9" rear differential (5 bolt) onto my truck. On the front it will have the 1/2 ton (light duty) disc brakes (five bolt).
The F250 came with the 3/4 ton set up Dana 60 rear end and heavy duty drum brakes front and rear ( eight bolt set up).
So, I'll have a half ton truck when I finish,
I know that is backwards to what most people do but, that's what I want.
The frame is same in regards to where everything bolts up. My rear springs are different but will still use the same hangers. I don't know if the frames differed in strenght or size, I think they were same on F250 and F100.

F250 frames are stronger than F100 but I don't have the numbers right in front of me.

Ok here are some numbers. Comparing 131" wheelbases, the F100 frame has a section modulus of 3.06 vs 3.89 for the F250 frame.

For 4x4 longbeds, you're looking at 4.14 vs 5.58.

It's been a while since I had physics but I know the higher the number, the stronger. Any ME's here?

Thanks for that info Barry.
You lost me there with the figures.
But, it's good to know that the frame on the F250 is beefyer.

Oh, By the way 6 Cyl Boy, the F250 I-Beams should bolt right up to the F 100.
The f100 I-beams I got are going to bolt right in on my F250 I'm told.
