I bought Seafoam last night to clean the fuel and intake system and will do that today. Hopefully will help in the 'ping' dept. Yeah, I did the Techron when towing too. ONCE! Not advised!!

I will have to check the under hood sticker on mine to see what weight oil is on it. My manual and the oil cap have 5w20. I have always thought that is a awfully thin oil to use on a large working engine. I just attributed to smaller oil passages in the internal components needed the thinner oil to move through.
that 1-2 seconds (and 3-5seconds) at startup is mechanical noise caused by the oiling system. Very very different from pre-ignition knock.

Ive posted elsewhere- my V10 consumes about a quart per thousand miles on 5w20. But when I run 5w30 or 10w30 or straight 30, it uses considerably less oil. About half as much: to the best of my memory.

Ford is recommending 5w30 in more engines now than they did ten years ago. Besides I bet money as much or more oil gets ran through the engine from the PCV system putting it back in the intake than gets past the rings. Don't run Techron in the truck if you are pulling much of any weight, it will make detonation worse while running it.(don't ask me how I know)

I was old school once too, that's the way it is, like it or not. Ford upgraded recommendations for ALL v10's to 5W20.

Not anymore, Ford is now recommending 5w30 in the new V10s as of last year. Nothing changed with the engines when they switched to 5w20 and again nothing changed when they switched to 5w30. I guess Ford just got tired of paying for the top end failure problems within the last few years and figured it was oil related.

I did the Seafoam treatment last night to the intake system. I will admit I was very skeptical and did not expect it to cure, or at best, minimize the 'ping'. Well, I am glad to say that the ping is gone! I believe that I will perform this treatment every 2nd oil change to help prevent future 'pinging' related to the oil and carbon buildup.

BTW.. I do not have a sticker in the engine bay that states what weight oil to use.

did you do the one that you spray it in, aerosol style? I've been thinking of doing that.

Yes. I had my son hold rpms ~2000 and it takes about 4-5 minutes to empty the can. It rattled and knocked bad when I first started the 'Spirited' drive to clean the gunk out, but after a few wfo runs it quit completely.
