I just bought my first superduty!! It is 2004 F-250 lariat crewcab fx4 with the 6.0 I have been wanting one for a long time and finally saved enough to get one. My concern is this. I live less than a mile from my work and someone told me it would be hard on the engine to drive it that short of a distance and then shut it off. I have looked through some of the older pots on here and some say it is not good to let them idle for long. So what would be the best routine for me to get into? 5 min warmup then drive to work. Or just drive it and not worry about it.
i am sort of in the same boat. I live about 3 miles form my office and drive an 04 F350 6.0. My observation is that driving this truck with a cold motor just sounds and feels terrible but if you let it idle to get up to temp it smokes at stop lights and smells terrible until you "blow it out". I usually let the truck run for about 5 minutes and then go nice and easy until it is warmed up. I work for myself as a landscape contractor so i am driving my truck around all day and do not really worry about it not getting completely up to temp during my drive in the morning. If I was to have it parked in a lot all day and then just a one mile drive home, I would be concerned about the moisture never really getting out of the motor, exhaust and the list goes on. Hopefully some one with a little more technical or expert opinion will chime in.
Same here, 2.5 miles to work one way, and I do it twice a day. My opinion is, you do more harm by letting it warm up than you do to just drive it. Idling is bad, plus a diesel will not warm up to operating temp by idling. The best thing you can do is to just let it idle for 30 seconds when you get in it, then drive easy. And make every attempt to get some driving in on weekends and get her hot to drive moisture out of the crankcase. Change your oil based on severe duty (5k miles) because those short trips are considered severe duty. Synthetic 5W/40 is highly recommended too.
