But start looking now for an engine. For what you want to do, I think it's best to find a running engine, and be present and witness it running before buying it. Otherwise, I stand my ground in saying to modify that 292 to easily match the torque of that 332.
It might not be a boat anchor just yet. You can't really know until you get it apart. The cylinder can be sleeved. All 8 pistons were seized in my 292. Several cylinders had water damage but #3 was the only one that needed a sleeve.
If the price gets above say $500, I'd want to hear it run before handing any money over but if it stays below that, it should make a good motor to rebuild, if it doesn't run.
The 302-332 was a HD engine derived from the LINC-Y series. It has a gear drive reverse rotation valve-train.
The LINC 368 was a HP car engine. It had a unique bell pattern and car bells are very scarce (only released on 57 MERC). The truck engine bells (279-302-332) are HD.
The automatic used after the discontinuation of the 4S HYDRA-MATIC was the Single-Range MERC-O-MATIC (medium case).
If one wants a somewhat performance 4V intake for the 368, it will come from a late 332. The car 4V intake had a very low sitting carb pad (hood clearance) that restricted HI-RPM flow. It also used a mounting pattern for a 4100 HOLLEY or small base CARTER.
I see all the sizes mentioned on this category, except the 332. 368 is a lincoln motor. Other than bore difference, does anyone have any info on the 332/368 Y-blocks? I have the chance to buy both motors. I'm thinking of stuffing one of them in my 60 F350.
hello, if you get the lincoln 368 and use the stick setup, intake and exhaust manifolds off the 332 you'll have a nice engine. if your tearing both engines down you could use the steel crank also. the truck engine uses solid lifters ( same as FE ) but the cam runs backwards because of the gears instead of chain. the 368 will have bigger valves and ports and higher ratio rockers. i'd suggest a set of perf. hyd. lifters for a FE with the stock lincoln cam. they used a overdrive 5 sp trans in a lot of buses if you're looking for used. hope this helps.
The transmission from factory is a G.M. hydro They shift out at 4800 in all gears except high gear. I wouldnt think stock lifters could float at that low r.p.m. what are your thoughts? ERATCHETOS
yes, fords first ohv v-8, the 1952 lincoln 317, also used in f-8 ford trucks. uses the same lifters as a FE. also the 368 lincoln engine should rev to at least 5600 with anti-pump up lifters. however you won't be reving that high in a truck or bus, but it's good insurance. this engine is almost the same bore spacing as the FE and has been bored to 4.25 back in the day. they used to get 428 cu.in. out of one of these. if you type in mermaid it will take you to royce's site. also rick martin runs in the 14's with his blown 317 in a 54 lincoln 4dr. pan american road race car.
I pulled my motor out of my 64 3/4 ton 4x4 ad it was paited orange along with the bell housing, The man I got the truck from his dad bought new and nothing has been changed on it at all; He said his dad ordered the truck with a H.D. 292 is that why it is paited orange instead of black?. Or what do you guys think? Ad is there anyway to tell the diff. betwee 292 ad 312 without running numbers. Thank Rod
