Which Coil is and plug is misfiring? 2000 ex, 6.8 v-10. Started her up this morning to go to work and it was skipping from the get go. Ran great last night. Who would have thought it would just....eh crap out? But anyway can anyone tell me how I can figure out how to find out what coil is bad without it tossing a check engine light? I would have thought it would have thrown a check engine light? Pulling each coil and installing a good one, taking it for a ride and repeating untill it doesnt skip anymore seems a bit redic... Any help would be appreciated. I also have the new snap on scan tool at my disposal but its brand new and my bud is not sure if it will show him what cyl is mis-firing unless theres a code
Best way is to get it to trip a CEL, may require taking her out and running her hard. Also
if it was the first run that you noticed it may take two consecutive runs with the same failure to trip a CEL light.
My Ex Never throws a check engine light for this issue...this has happend like 4-6 times in 10 years, never tossed a light. Just want to fix it myself other then taking it to a stealership for diagnosis.
anyone have any ideas other then running it hard to try and get it to set a light? What about taking the temp with a laser temp sensor at ever exhaust port? would this work? In my theory, I am thinking that all the header pipes on the exhaust ports would be running in close proximity of temp and the one thats not firing would be significantly cooler..???? I have gibson headers not the stupid exhaust manifolds....
Man, talk about ansy. The rest of the world on the left coast is still working while yer having fun. JUST kidding.
I have talked to a ford techy about v-10's and using water to wash motors, and the infamous damage with water in there.
His response was not to worry, and infact when they need to diagnose a misfire that is not running a code yet they use a water\vinegar mix and spray around each boot\plug area while running which usually trips a code. What they have found when looking at this they found the boots usually malfunction and then the cop goes out.
You may also want to replace all the boots with new and use dielectic grease around the seat and the contacts to the plug when installing new. Don't forget to first blow out any debri\water first from that area before the new boots.
Just put it on the code scanner and it will tell you what cylinder. I have also had bad COP and never had a CEL. Autozone can scan it for free for you if you do not have access to a scanner.
I have the V10 ex- you can visually check for hairline cracks on the top of the coil packs. Those will be highly suspect ... When moisture gets in the cracks they misfire ...
