well my 6.9 turbo had been sitting since november farm season. had to change the fuel pump due to it dumping fuel into the oil pan. started it up to move it into the garage.....idled fine for about 10 min. hopped in pulled up the driveway stopped stuck her in reverse.....tached it up to about 2500 backing down the driveway (maybe 5mph with 4.10s) all of a sudden.... knock knock knock knock bang VRROOOOOOOOOmMMMM went up the 4500 an white smoke everywhere so i killed the key....kept on going shoved it into 4th held the brake and dumped the clutch and stalled it out.
sooo i guess there was more fuel in the pan then i thought. enough it was running out of the dipstick where it does into the pan....i guess the cdr sucked it up an ran away.
well atleast the inside of the motor should be flushed out now...
good thing is it didnt run away for more then a few seconds. and i havent driven it anywhere knowing i need to fix it. the fuel pump is probally a year old......i need to use the warentee on that..
well worst case scenario.....is since it needs a front end anyway its getting a d60 straight axle.....a maybe a 12v cummins if this hurt the motor too bad.
the 6.9 maybe has 7k miles on it since a rebuild too.
just figured i'd share that story with you guys......
Hopefully it didn't hurt anything BUT that much diesel had the oil pretty diluted, and that doesn't mix good with high rpm's. It is probably alright though. let us know.
yeah i noticed it pulling about 12k worth slabs last fall the oil pressure hot was slowly dropping. i changed the oil and about a gallon of fuel came out with it it held good oil pressure with the new oil so i parked it till i had time to work on it. that was the last time it was run. it cranked over without making any funny noises afterwards although i made sure i had the ip shut off.
plus 1 for having the manual trans.
minus 1 for stock lift pumps.
acting swiftly to kill a runaway IDI = plus 5.
sounds like she'll be alright since you got her under control quick tho.
scary stuff.
you wont start another freshly rebuilt IDI with diesel in her base ever again.
thats for sure.......it actually ran away in the road as i was going to turn her around and everyone in my neighborhood was coming home from work, they hate me anyways haha everyone drives their bmw's and european sports cars where i live, here i am with these old ford trucks loud.....big and stuck in the road. i called my brother and had him come over and drive one of my other trucks to pull the diesel in the driveway. i wasnt about to blow it up by risking starting it up again.
i think i reacted so fast because......back in hs i was used to running things that at any point something randomly could happen......so deep down inside i kind of expected it.
she's parked behind the garage waiting for it warm up so i can work on her.
maybe i should just put an electric on it......but then again its nice to be able to pullstart it when the batteries are dead with the manual pump.
if it was an auto idk if i could of gotten my tshirt off fast enough and pulled the air cleaner to shut it down before it blew up or not haha
haha even if i was a yota im smart enough to know what to do in a runaway deal. idk how brain dead those people are who wreck because of it. its not like the lil yota has cobra power or anything, it holds WOT and maybe it downshifts an gains 5mph.......in the time it takes for it to get fast enough to do anything i'd shove that thing in the big N!!!!!!!! (as if anyone that drives those things knows what that means on the shifter) an watch her bounce off the limiter
I have been watching this on tv today and I guess at least one put hers in nuetral with both feet on the brake and finally put it in reverse and left it and nothing worked, it finally stopped and she pulled over and said she never got in that car again. lol
