ABS ring on diff? Do I need it?

I just got a 8.8 31 spline traction lock unit on EBAY with the factory Ford 3.73's. It has an ABS tone ring bolted under the ring gear. It came out of a 92 Explorer rear diff. I want to put it in my 2000 F-150 rear so do I need the ABS tone ring? If not should I remove it or just leave it there? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

You should need the ring for two reasons. Your abs should run off of it. And your speedometer should run off of it. Removing the ring would disable both.

Yes, you need it. For both reasons heath mentioned, and also for your transmission, cruise, & auto-dimming mirror (optional).

Incidentally, it's not bolted on. It just slips onto the lip of the carrier flange. You can pull it or install it with the ring gear installed.

Be careful if you go to pry it off. There's a tab that prevents the ring from turning on the diff. You have to pry up the opposite side first and then slip it off. If not you'll break the tab and have to buy a new ring.
