Toyota steering fitting question..........

I have found a '79-'85 4X4 Toyota steering box. It does not have either fitting for the pressure or return lines. I'm curious as to whether I can use fittings off of another Toyota box. I'm sure they are metric and wonder if other Toyota products might use the same size fittings. I realize I'll have to fabricate the hoses as required.

Tim,

It should work, and it probably doesn't have to be strictly toyota either as long as its the right size metric. Keep in mind that the two fittings are different sizes; one is a 16mm and the other is 17mm (or 17mm and 18mm I can't remember). They are very close and its easy to get them mixed up.

I fabbed my own pressure hose as I had to convert from the metric toyota box to my standard Saginaw pump. I used a small piece of hard steel line at the pump...I cut off one end and slid a metric fitting on the line and reflared it giving me a short steel line with a standard fitting going into my pump and a metric fitting to attach to a hose assy. I found a combination steel and rubber hose off of some foreign car that had a male metric fitting on one end to fit my box and a metric female flare fitting on the other end to attach to my short fabbed up hard line.

Good luck with it
Bobby

there are companies that make an adapter to AN fitting for the pressure side and then you can run a pre made braided line like the kits. i had heck of a time trying to find a return fitting so i just fixed what i had, if you can find another toyota ones them get them.

I just purchased fittings for both. They are adapters from the toyota box to #6AN. Then you can have a standard hydraulic hose made up for the pressure side and a low pressure return hose. I got them here.

Gotta Show makes the hoses I used. SS braided hose with specially made correct size (16, 17 mm) banjo fittings for the box. The banjo fittings are very low profile if you have header clearance issues like I did. If you have the room Mid Fifty sells a hose set with adapter fittings for both ends of the hose to mate Toy box with any pump. Note most saginaw pumps use 16mm reverse flare fittings same as Toyota pressure side.
Note: every hydraulic hose place I checked with around here said NOPE, not here! when I told them I wanted power steering hoses made since PS pressures can reach 1K# at full lock.
