Good morning.
I have an 88 F-250 with a 460 with about 125K miles on it that has developed what I can best describe as a low pitched whine coming from the front of the motor, the noise is almost constant but will go away for a few seconds then return and go on for quite a while again, it is loud enough that I can hear it in the cab when the truck is ildeling.
I have ruled out the external accessories along with the water pump, also using my stethascope I don't pick up the noise from the timing cover so I think I can rule out the timing set.
When I put the stethascope probe against the distributor housing just above the hold down clamp I can hear it, I don't believe it is the dist. so that leaves the oil pump. The oil pressure guage has all ways read low, but I assumed it was just a bad sending unit, now I don't know.
I have never heard an oil pump make noise, any thoughts?
Thanks.
Well if you think its the oil pump , you can remove the dist & turn the oil pump with a drill & see what happens , to make sure its not the idler pulleys or accessories , you can remove the belt & start it up ...Lew
The noise is deffinately internal, removing the dist. is going to be my next move, just as soon as i can get a hold of a pump priming tool.
Thanks for the reply Lew.
