hey guys was wondering what the general consensus is for the best valve body for the best price is? and if anyone has a write up on it thanks in advance.
p.s does anyone have a write up on how to install cab lights on a truck that didnt come with them, or at least how difficult it is
BTS and a John Wood VB are the top two here. Clay at RiffRaff Performance Diesel above in our sponsor section can take care of yaa. I got my JW VB from ITP Diesel before Clay was in business, Dennis at ITP is great to deal with also.Very easy install, just take your time. Check your search feature for cab light installs, should be a bunch in there.
BTS and JWVB are equals in price and quality. Izzy/Joe always recommends a shift kit. It is basically the same thing you just do the drilling and stuff yourself. To do a true shift kit you would have to drop the tranny.
Anyhow. My standard is telling you to pick the VB mfg closest to you. That way when you lose your tranny you can go get their entire rebuilt tranny. In your case JW in Cali is way closer than BTS in the SE.
i drove matts truck to ct with stock valve body an back to nj with the john woods valve body and i can say it def made a very nice diffrence and easy to install just messy
I love my BTS. Like stated above, Joe(Izzy) is real big on recommending you do it yourself by buying a Transgo Tugger kit. He and a few other guys have done them and they are very happy. If you have a programmer JW VB does not usually require a re-burn, but Jody highly recommends one if you have a DP and go the BTS route.
I went with JW simply because I knew I was going with a DPTuner, and those two play nice together. I love it. I've done DIY shift kits before with mixed results, so the idea and convenience of simply swapping valve bodies was also appealing to me. It is more expensive than a Transgo though.
But like said above, if you're close to a good trans builder I'd go that route. With me I'm in a long days drive to BTS, so when the time comes I'll probably go there and have him install it. Won't be able to reuse the JWVB.
I guess I'm the odd one out with the Factory Tech Valve Body. I've had it for 2 years and love it. Hands down one of the best driveability mods I've done. Quick, crisp, firm shifts. I love it. I've purchased a lot of stuff from Bob Riley at www.dieselsite.com and he has been great and sells great stuff too so I didn't have any second thoughts buying from them (still don't).
Although, now that I know more (I bought the Factory Tech shortly after I bought the truck), I would probably go with the John Wood valve body since I live an hour and a half from his shop, but I am in no way disappointed with my valve body.
I got my JWVB from Riffraff Diesel. I have been very happy with it. One of the big selling points for me (because I'm cheap), is that Riffraff only charges a $50 core charge. Other places were as much as $150 on the core. That and Clay's service is top notch!

You do know that you get the core charge back when you mail it back in???
I am smarter than my posts let on. Its still money that you have to front at the time of purchase. That core charge is $50 - $150 that I don't have for a week or two.
