i remember a while back i saw someone use easy off oven cleaner on the plenum and took the grease off. i also noticed that it was very acid like because it was also sprayed on the block and it stripped the paint off the block.
There is a coating inside the plenum and the throttle body from the factory. I don't know what it is or how important it is. I would guess that its there to prevent the aluminum from corroding which bare aluminum does.
I never said that that cleaning product would ruin it. I have never used that stuff for anything like this so I don't know how strong it is.

aluminum oxide, unlike iron oxide (rust), actually helps to protect the underlying metal .. so once it has this layer of 'oxide' it stops corroding ..
Aluminum is actually very prone to corrosion. However, aluminum corrosion is aluminum oxide, a very hard material that actually protects the aluminum from further corrosion. Aluminum oxide corrosion also looks a lot more like aluminum, so it isn't as easy to notice as rusted iron.
The coating is on the throttle plates from what I have read; so I used CRC throttle body cleaner there. But the upper intake I used on-sale generic brake cleaner and it did a great job. Acetone or naphta will also work but are rough stuff; flammable and evaporate quickly.
get a big bucket that the upper intake will fit in and fill it full of carb. cleaner and let it soak in it for a few days then take it out get a rag a little wire brush and some carb cleaner in a can and wipe it out scrub and all that good stuff that involves manual labor lol
idk how well that will work but it had worked wonders on carb.s
That Berrymans' B12 stuff works good. I have a gallon can of it that even has a basket in it for soaking parts. It works really well. I know the can isn't big enough to soak the intake, but I bet it would clean up the intake pretty good. I agree with soaking it in a container big enough to hold it. Thats the best bet short of taking it somewhere to have it cleaned.
