I went into an area today that wasn't plowed yet. When I turned on the switch to turn the 4x4 on no lights nothing. It has been working good the last two weeks with all the snow we had. I tried several times on the way home several times and it wouldn't come on. Then it started working. I tried it several lmore times sometimes it would and some times it wouldn't work. I took the switch out of the dash and un plugged it and put it back in and now it is working all the time and I can hear it (4x4) kick in and out. Where is the motor or whatever turns on the 4x4 located so I can check for loose connections at that end. I know nothing about it. Is there any place that would show me a pic of it?
Thanks
I have a 2001 f250 it has lockout hubs on it
Does your truck have esof? or manual hubs? I just went thru my dads 2000 sd with this same issue. First , open the hood and look for thr power distribution box or fuse box on drivers side near the brake resivour...open it and check for loose or blown fuses. right next to the fuse box is a smaller box,it may be wrapped with some black tape....this is the relays for the 4x4 shift motor, one relay puts into 4x the other pulls it out of 4x. wiggle them or pull them out and clean the contacts, try that and see if it helps...there's only about a BAZILLION ways for the esof to fail on these trucks....when it works , it works great ....but when it doesn't....it's crap, and you wanna it. try a search in the super duty forum this horse has been beat to death. . by the way, the shift motor for the transfer case is on drivers side of the transfer case, behind the skid plate has a black cylinder like a starter mounted to it. the connectorhas a clip that has to be slid back before you can unplug it to spray with contact cleaner. good luck
