towing power.. Weak?

I used to two with an 05 expedition that would had plenty of towing power. I would climb the cajon pass and stay at 70 with out much trouble. This weekend I had my first chance to tow with my 01 f250 v10. I was not very impressed. I could barely pull up the cajon pass at 50 mph. It towed great other than that. I guess I just thought the V10 would out pull the 5.4? Does it sound like something is wrong?

You definitely got something wrong. Post up some details of your truck including miles and maintenance you have done recently. When was the last time you changed the fuel filter, air filter, and coil ons?

I just got the truck a couple months ago and it has 132,000 miles. I have not had a chance to do any maintenance. Searching here it seems that I should change the air & fuel filter, change the spark plugs and clean the MAF sensor. Do you think it just needs maintenance? I will start there.

Is it possible an '05 Expedition with the 5.4L and a 4.10 rear end would tow a little bit better than an '01 F250 w/ the V10 and a 3.73 rear end. In other words what I'm trying to say is, is the HP and torque ratings for an '05 5.4L similar to an '01 V10?

Or as the OP stated could a good dose of maintenance be in order?

OK answered my own question...

'05 Expy w/ 5.4L = 300HP and 365ftlbs torque
'01 F250 w/ 6.8L = 310HP and 425ftlbs torque

Maybe a good tuneup is in order. What ratio rear end did/do both vehicles have?

I think the expedition had 3.55 gears. I know it did not have the upgraded towing package so what ever was stock.

I have not checked on the f250 yet. I does seem like something is not right though. Around town I do get a little bit of pinging but not bad. I will at least change the fuel filter and clean the maf by this weekend. I want to set a whole day for the plugs just in case.

Ps.. Not sure why I put it was a 01 but it is not it is a 99.

Don't forget the wheels are smaller, making the gearing pretty close.

If it's a '99, that's very restricted in terms of breathing at the higher RPMs. Even with lower gears like 4.30's, it might not pull as fast as the Expedition did, because it will rev even higher, causing to lose a lot of power.

Post back tire sizes, gears, everything you can about the '99

Also, don't forget the 99's were not as strong as the 01-04 2v motors. I believe the 99's were 275hp and closer to 400lbs. So the 3v 5.4l would probably be a little better.
