I'm gettin' ready to install the Toyota box on my '55. What type of steering columns has everybody used. I was hoping to pull one at the boneyard (although I'd really like an ididit or something). One with tilt would be nice. My shifter is already on the floor. It seems like couplers or knuckles are avail. for most all applications I just need to figure out which way I'm going.
Tacson, right now the ignition switch is on the dash. But I'm open to all ideas. This is basically the second time around for the '55. I bought it in 1976 (not a typo 1976) and in the last few years have updated a few things: painless wiring, power disc brakes, power bench seats, and a 390ci. FE and C-6 and radial tires. Boy did it steer better without those g-G-50 bias ply in the front.
That is going to be a hard but doable find. If you want a tilt column you are going to need to find a pre 69 GM column. In 69 all GM columns with exception to truck and vans had the key in column. You could cut the ignition housing off and remove all the lock mechanisms on floor shifted car like the Camaro, Firebirds, Monte Carlos, Regals, etc. The column in my 55' had the key on the column and a buddy of mine cut off the ignition housing and removed all the lock mechanisms but the shifter is on the column. Let me know if I can help you in any way. I work in a salvage yard part time.
