Hi guys i have a 94 f350 powerstroke 5spd with 3:55 gears when im going down the raod at 65 to 70 mph our my rpm is at 2000 rpm what gears would you recommend to drop the rpm to like 1800 or less?
If your already in 5th then your maxed out. Dropping to lower gears and maintaining the same speed will require more throttle and in turn will cause an increase the rpms.
that is if your not on a encline.
If your talking about changing your rear end gear ratio thats another issue.
Why do you want to drop them any lower? You may gain fuel efficiency, but your towing capabilities will take a pretty good hit.
I've never heard anyone going lower than 3:55's. The majority of these trucks has 4:10's with a select few of them having anything else.
1800 Rpms is pretty much the threshold where your going to see your power. When your rolling down the road at anything less you efficiency is going down.
well the way the truck is now its horrible on fuel the company iwork for has mostly dodges and they're getting far better fuel economy than i do. I have a cold air intake and i put on 3 inch down pipe and 5 inch exhaust and i have a superchips tuner but i'm thinking about going with somthing else when i get the money. The truck isn't a dually so it should get better milage than most.
When is the last time you serviced the truck? Back when my rig was stock I'd get over 300 miles a tank when not towing. Now that I have some decent mods I'd like to see 300 consistently again.
Bottom line is make sure you have good oil and no fuel restrictions.
its easier to put on larger tires than it is to change out ring and pinions.
And its a bit easier to make smaller increments with the tires than gears.
going one size taller than stock wont kill fuel.
Our trucks came with 3.55's and 4.10's.
I dont think they came with any other sizes. Driving to far below the power band will kill fuel economy.
what kind of truck is it? 300 miles to a tank sounds about right putting you at 16-17 mpg. thats not too bad for winter fuel blends. although i would assume it would be a little bit higher with 3.55's and a 5 speed truck unless its a crew cab then the numbers sound like par for the course. with 4.10's and 37 inch tires on an extended cab auto truck i am getting about 15-16 right now
Over on PSN there is a guy that has 3.08's. Aftermarket of course. I had 3.55's and will again. I'm also running 37" tires. Yup, towing is not as impressive, but MT mileage was up over 22mpg from a best of 17 before. That was when my rig was still 2wd though. Now with the 4wd and 4.10's, I'm not sure. Still running the 37's.
im looking for a set of 3.08 gears. i think 22-23 is possible. i believe a .8/9 ar exhaust housing would help alot as well. seems like it would allow alot more air at lower rpm
