Um, I hope this doesn't sound like a smart-aleck but... don't you mean the studs in the axle housing?
A 9 inch doesn't use bolts. It uses studs in the housing, and nuts to retain the third member (chunk or hogshead) in place.

The OP is correct....these are bolts.
According to the pic in the parts catalog, these bolts are installed from the inside of the housing.
There are serrations on these bolts (similar to what wheel studs have) that hold them fast into the housing.
All you see on the outside of the housing are threads...which makes the bolts appear to be studs.
