well I have a 84 6.9 its a joke won't run I have been looking at newer deisel trucks
so here is what I've come up with it's got to be a psd 250 or 350 extended cab or 4 door daully and lwb optional
I'm finding these truck in the 96 and 97 years around here for 15'000 to 17'000 range most with auto's
my real question is what kind of milage are you getting out of your psd in these years Iknow gear ratio matters just need a Ideal
what to watch out for did these come in turbo or are they n/a diesels???
will that diablo chip work in these?
I heard the auto was doggy
I will be using to cruise around during the week and pull my stockcar on friday and saturday nights
and the 3 trips to texas per year 2000 miles per round trip
just wondering to go with a psd or stick with my gasohalic???
all comment's are welcomed

The PSD is a turbo engine, and your mpg could vary, but most guys are getting 14-16 around town, with 18-20 on the road. It would drop to 10-12 when towing, depending on load. Auto's aren't "doggy", they actually out-accelerate 5spds because the turbo stays spooled up when you're running through the gears. The tranny is a matter of preference, really.

My milage has been from 25 Mpg but that was between Havasue and Vegas with the cruz on at 55Mph. But I get an average of 17Mpg I try and keep from spinning the engine over 2500Rpms. that gives me a range of 600 mile per tank. (38gl) but I have never put over 32 gal in it.
I wouldn't but one if it didn't have a turbo on it. Also I would have a good diesel Mechanic check it befor you buy it.
Last if you do a lot of towing a diesel is the onlly was to go, the torq in these trucks is unreal.

There are also n/a (naturally aspirated) powerstroke diesels out there too.
Shoot an email to Ken, I can't remember if it was the year of truck or simply my computer code that Diablo didn't have a chip for... too bad I would have like to had the switch on the fly option.
I'll tell ya what the supertuner sure woke it up, it was sure a little on the doggy side until I loaded the 50-60 hp program.

Let me clear up a little confusion: Ford has sold a few different diesel engines. The first that I know of was a 6.9 liter, normally aspirated engine. Then, they came out with a 7.3 liter normally aspirated, then added a turbo to that a few years later. This was in the early '90's. In mid- '94, they came out with the Powerstroke. It was only available in a 5spd in late '94, but in '95 they offered an automatic transmission in a Powerstroke truck. A Powerstroke is electronically controlled, and turbocharged. The previous 7.3 liter turbo wasn't electronically controlled, and wasn't a Powerstroke. The basic design of the Powerstroke has remained the same, with some upgrades in the '99 model year. Now, they've got the 6.0 liter engine, that is also called a Powestroke. If it's older than a '94, it ain't a 'Stroke.

I have a '96 F350 crew cab dually, 5-speed manual. 17 mpg @ 55 mph. 13.5 mpg @ 70 mph. Towing a 10,000 pound fiver, around 8-10 mpg. This truck has a 4.10 rear-end, so it is winding up around 2,700 rpm or so at 70 mph. I imagine you get substantially better highway mileage with a high-geared rear end.
I installed the Superchip Microtuner a couple days ago, using the conservative "tow safe" setting. The difference in performance is phenomenal. Going from 50 to 65 on a mild uphill grade near here went from 14 seconds to 8-9 seconds. It feels like a whole different engine. Haven't had the chip long enough to know what the effect is on mileage.
