Ok, My C6 seems to be slipping abit in reverse, especially when backing uphill. I leave it in 4x4 so I can back up the hill of my rear drive to leave in the mornings. LOL!
I have a 6.9 with the C6 mated to it out in the scrap yard at work that I am going to bring home for parts, but I am thinking of trying to rebuild that trans.
I have never rebuilt an engine or transmission, just starters, altrenators, and waterpumps, but I am thinking it can't be real hard to take something apart and put it back together. Since it would be a junk trans then I can't really lose anything but time.
I wonder though, is Haynes the best manual for direction on that or is there a better one out there?
a C6 uses the same clutch for high (3rd) & reverse, that is the first set of clutches you pull out after the pump,in the drum that has the band around it, watch how you take it appart it's not hard to put back together (change the rev-high clutch & piston seals that are in there under the springs) good luck,Gigger
I am pretty sure I am mistaken about the difficulty level. LOL! I am just in the "thinking" stages and have no money so makes me think crazy things. I would like to try though and since its a junk trans I may get brave.
I believe if you are smart enough to know you need a book to guide you through, you will probably make it. I would also look on the web. You might find a step by step on someone's website that would help also.
P.S. I just did a google search on "c6 rebuild" and a ton of sites came up, some of them mustang sites. Should be lots of info out there.
The C6 is is a pretty simple transmission to work on and rebuild. I have rebuilt several Ford automatics and a C6 is a easy one to start out on.
Take your time tearing it apart, take lots of pictures so that you can she how it was and get a good idea of how to put it back together, find some sort of a manual or info off the net as there is a ton of stuff out there. Air pressure check everything once fully assembled to make sure you did not cut a o-ring seal, bolt the valve body back on and the pan and rock and roll.
There are only a couple of bolts you need to remove to get the valve body off and then you can tear it apart on a bench to make sure you dont loose any of the check ***** and springs and such, there are good pictures out there that show you where to place them when you go back together.
Below is one of my sources for parts. They also have a very useful manual for rebuilding the c-6. I recommend Alto Red Eagle clutches and an Red Eagle Kevlar band. Also thier diesel shift kit works excellent. The only part that may give you trouble is compressing the wafer style spring for thr forward clutch drum.
Have a large CLEAN area to lay everything out in order of disassembly and work on it in stages one at a time and you'll have no problem. Upon assembly don't forget to soak your clutches prior.
Good Luck.

My wife and I rebuilt our first trans. in 1995, a chev 700R4. The only problem we had with it was with the rebuild kit we bought from the "guy who knows everything" transmission shop. With a good manual and the right parts and tools anyone with mechanical abilities and patience can do it.
