Well, today I went to pull-a-part to get a connector/bracket for the emergency brake(mission successful) while I was there I went searching for a cluster with a tachometer. After finding many had already been pulled I found one in a 94.
I began the process of swapping and plugged in the 'new' cluster to check mileage, lights, etc. While doing that I noticed it had 350,000 miles. I didn't want it to be showing that mileage and uncertain if the speedometer actually worked; I swapped my known to be good Speedo out of my 'old' cluster to the 'new' cluster. Cleaned everything up put it all back together and in the truck. Now the speedo doesn't work, it stays at 0 then all of a sudden it shoots to 50mph. Also with this new cluster the ABS light stays on after the truck starts moving. The odometer is working fine and reading like it should.
With my old cluster I didn't have any of these problems. What could my issue be? I've made sure and checked connections to be sure that they are seated fully.
Problems: Speedo not working after a cluster swap(swapped known old good speedo to 'new' cluster), ABS light stays on after truck moves, Odometer works like it should.
My truck is a 1992 4.9 M05 4x4, the donor cluster came from a 1994 5.0 auto 4x4
I don't see why it would matter as I used the speedometer from my 92 and put it in the 92 cluster? Everything works minus my speedometer, now along with an ABS light on constantly.
The clusters are wired differently. A 94,95,96,or 97 cluster won't jive with your truck no matter what year speedo head you put in it. It will plug in, and SOME things will work. Then over time things will stop working 1 by 1.
Ok, so my best bet is to repin the connectors? Or should I just toss the 94 and try to find a 92-93? Repining would be the easiest as I don't think there are any Tach clusters from 92-93 here.
You might be able to repin it but I don't have a factory ford wiring diagram for 92 or 94 and I don't trust the haynes or chilton books. I think SUBFORD is good with the repining but if I were you I'd get one for a 92. You might find a 92 cluster on eBay.
Thanks for the help. I just went back up to the junk yard, got lucky, found a 92 with the cluster sitting under a pulled door panel. Someone must have pulled it to get out the bulbs as that was the only thing missing
I swapped it into my truck and almost everything is working. The only thing that isn't working is the Battery/Voltage gauge. I'll take it as a win for now as the oil, temp., speedometer, and tachometer work.

that happened to me once and it took some time and patience but I swaped the volt gauge out of my original into my tach cluster. Glad to hear it's workin for ya.
