A little offroad adventure
Last weekend, we decided we wanted to see snow and being that we're only about 15 miles from the Olympic National Forest with hundreds and hundreds of trails in the middle of nowhere through the mountains, we decided to go hunting for it. There was about 2 inches of snow from about 4k feet and at about 6500 ft on the gps, we were at about a foot of snow and being that the road was about as wide as the truck and dropped straight off the side of the mountain, we decided to stop and go back. The truck was just getting too squirrely. I think with a set of offroad chains we would have been fine. Shame too, cause we were almost at the top of Mt. Townshend. Oh well, maybe next time. Here's some pictures.

They are BFG Commercial Tractions and I like them very much. They did very well in the mud and muck that isn't in the pictures. They did great in the snow too, until it was really deep snow. They are also excellent in the wet; I got them because of their high rating in wet traction and snow and ice. I live in the northwest, so we get constant rain for about 4-5 months every winter and I was tired of hydroplaning with the Dean tires I had. They cut through large sheets of water on the road like nothing is there.

Gotta love the Pacific Northwest. The lack of winter this year has been killing me too. I was in heaven last year with all the snow we had but this year...? Mother Nature must have heard we were hosting the Olympics. I haven't been able to get out at all this year as my youngest is just 6 months old. Being not too far from each other, we should get together and do some Ford backwoods exploring. I do a good job keeping my truck well maintained but having a mechanical breakdown when I'm driving solo still makes me nervous.
Thanks for the pics.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I'd love a off road get together with some people around here. There are hundreds of miles of sweet trails in the Olypmic Forest here and there are a bunch that I would have loved to go down but I was alone and didn't want to get stuck 40 miles off the grid with no help. I'm going to pick up some of the forest service road maps from the ranger station in Quilcene and map out the place better. It's hard with just the gps because not all of it shows up too well and it won't map out directions through service roads like that. I'm going to use the maps to draw out various routes through the mountains. Looks like it's possible to go from where I am all the way up to Port Angeles via different trails back there.
