I have a steering rack that started to leaking out of the top of it. Were the u-joints connect. So I pulled it. Went to my local auto parts guy. And he said I had 2 ways to go. Rebuild it. He had the kit,for like 50 dollars. Or I could buy a replacement for little over 1 hundred. I decided to replace to unit. I took the new one home and installed it. But when I got ready to hookup the power and return lines I notice there was a diffrence. The lines I pulled out were like screw in. But the new rack needs both lines to be push in with o rings. So pulled it back out, back to the auto parts . I was told the ranger was supose to have the push in lines. So ok,I went along with that and ask for 2 new lines. The pressure line comes correct with the alum end to push in and the o rings. But the low pressure line, all it comes with is the rubber line,. Thats find i could put it on and with 2 clamps its good to go. But one problem. The rack does not have anything to slide the hose on and the low pressure rubber line does not have a fitting to go into the rack. Is there a part number or name of that little alum fitting ( im sure) that the low pressure line goes on and also the o rings, 2002 is not that old some one, parts man or dealer must carry it. I have checked the local junk yards, with no luck ! I guess I will try the dealer monday. But it be great If I had a name or part number. I donot have anything to look at. But it seems to me there most be 2 fittings to go in the rack with a lil plate to hold them down. That I do not have. Or maybe one plate with two fittings on it . maybe held down by about a 10mm screw. The screw is on the pump sticking up like 1 1/4 inch. beside the 2 holes. Sorry if I made this confusing. I can email pictures, just dont know how to in this forum. Thanks !
My 03 has the type of rack you purchased (push in fittings/o rings and top plate). My neighbors 97 has the flare type screw on fittings which sounds like what you originally had. That sounds like what you need for your replacement instead of trying to retrofit from the original rack to the newer type. Also the pumps are totally different between the two types. My rack started leaking out of the retainer plate that holds the lines in place. Dealer said it was high pressure line but that didn't solve problem. I think it was actually a faulty O ring. They eventually had to replace entire rack. There are also different racks for 4 and 6 cylinders so make sure you specify that too.
