I have a 79 f250 4x4 that came factory with a 300 six, then the guy that i bought the truck from put a 360 in it and it looks like he just slid the motor mounts back. So i was wandering what i have to do to put the 400 in it, Do i keep the mounts where they are or move them forward?
I wish I could help you more but this is what I know about this with 2 wheel drives.
A '79 could have come from the factory with a 400 engine (2wd) not sure about 4wd but I think they also came with 400s-I am not familliar with the motor mount system on a 4wd, but on the 2wd a 400 uses small block mount supports that can come from a 302 equipped truck and the mounts themselves can be bought new for the 400.
The 400 MAY have both bolt patterns to accept a "small block" transmission/bellhousing or a "big block" 429/460 trans. the trans/bellhousing behind the current 360 won't bolt up as its an FE family engine.
I took a 460 & its mount supports out of my '78, installed small block mount supports and a 400 engine with ITS OWN mounts, then later I removed the 400 and installed a 302 with ITS OWN MOUNTS to the same supports I'd used with the 400. I hope somehow this helps you.........
i have a 78 f150 4x4. im not sure if the 250s frame mounts were moved, wouldnt really think so. my truck originally came with the 300 six in it, and the guy before me put 351m in it. i just recently put my overhauled 400 in it and i didnt mess with the mounts at all. bolted right up. just make sure you have the right mount on the right side. as far as i know, the only way youd have to mess with the mounts is if your putting a 460 in it-which they make a mount that accomodates for that motor to bolt up right.
