Ford vs Chevy Engines-Horsepower/torque

First, let me clarify that I am a dyed in the wool Ford man. Will never own anything but a Ford truck. BUT (here it comes) does anyone other than me think that Chevy got the upper hand on Ford with it's latest engines? I'm talking about horsepower/torque output. Diesel-wise, I'd much rather have the Ford 6.0 over GM's Isuzu built 6.6L diesel but GM's 4.8/5.3/8.1L gas engines seem to leave Ford's 4.6/5.4/6.? in the dust. Again, I'm not talking quality, I'm talking power. Maybe I'm wrong (I hope so) and if so, please say so.

I think Ii would have to agree with you. While I like my Ford F250 better then I liked my Z71 Half ton, i think that the 5.7 350 had more umph then the 5.4 does.

I,M afraid i have to agree also, chevys have always had more hp than our fords. i dont know why ford allows that. i think that our engines could be more exciting, my V10 could have 400 hp and be ultra reliable at the same time.

I agree with ya there. I have a 5.3 that could toast my 5.4 in comparative vehicles. I had the unique experience of owning both at the same time. I drove 1 and my wife the other. They are geared very similar, and are similar in weight. The 5.3 is definately more fun to drive, and gets better milege.
Dont get me wrong, i bleed ford blue, but as a highway vehicle i prefer a gm. I drive my fords when the weather gets bad, because I know theyll get me there.

You guys are looking at engines without looking at the packages. The chevy engines make higher peak power at higher rpms. This is great for a race car. Ford designed their engines for lots of torque at lower rpms. This is great for a pickup. If you want to see which one gets down the 1/4 fastest empty, you will likely win in the chevy. If you want to see which one pulls a big trailer up a hill quickest from a stop, you will likely win in the Ford. Power claims don't tell the whole story. Ford designed a truck engine and put it in a truck. Chevy designed a car engine and put it in a truck. Both great motors, just designed for different purposes.

I would have to agree with Ranger79. FORD alwayz had their low rpm horsepower, it's the best, and as far as the engine now. you figure. The 6.0 vortec is rated at 300 hp at 5100 rpm. the V10 6.8 is rated at 310 at 3000 rpm. So you figure, If the v10 exceed the rpm of 3000 to 5000 rpm, obviously we'll get more power, so I'd rather have the low end torque any day. Besides I like the Blue oval on the front of my grill.

FORD TOUGH!
If you haven't looked at FORD lately look again.

I think you guys have over looked the most important fact that Chevys standard rear axle ratio is 3.73 and Ford is 3.55. The Chevy should out pull your Ford from a stop.

If I am buying a truck for working and towing it better not be making peak power at 5100rpm. That is rediculous in my book. I didn't know the V10 made its peak that low though. That is lower than the 300I6 peak by 400 rpm.

Edit: I just looked up the specs. The V10 makes 310HP@4250rpm. Still not bad.

That's actually incorrect. The regular cab 2wd has a 3.08. The Extended cab has a 3.42. Z71's come standard with 3:73s. 2500+ have 4:10 standard except the Duramax which has only the 3:73.

The 4.8L is considerably quicker than the 4.6L, however it needs 4:10s to compare to the 4.6L w/3.55 gears for towing applications. GM will eventually eliminate this motor for heavier trucks. The 5.3L is the same way as the 4.8L comparing it to the 5.4L. However, in HD trucks, the 6L is considerably better for the trucks than the 5.4L. Ford has to do something with this motor, it's WAY behind compared to the 6L and 5.7L hemi. The 6.8L V-10 is stuck between the 6L and 8100 BB. In most gasser HD applications, this motor is an excellent choice. The 8100 is a HUGE gas hog.

Ford vs Chevy Engines-Horsepower/torque

I have driven Fords all my life. I bought a new Duramax diesel two years ago, at that time the Chavy was the most powerful engine availible. But that is not the reason that I bought the Chevy. The biggest reason was because of the Allison transmittion. Another reason was because I am a tall man (6-3) and the chevy has the most head, foot, and leg room over all trucks, you can get 6 full size guys with plunty of room. The chevy rides lower to the ground and has great ground clearance, my wife can get in and out easily even in the snow. Before I bought a truck I test drove everything and was very open minded about it, the Chevy drove and handled the best, loaded or empty. When I say loaded I sell gun safe's at gun show's and I usually scale at about 21,000+lbs. I still have my work horse 92 F-350 diesel with a ATS turbo, spliter and intercooler that runs great, but my Chevy still out pulls, and rides better. but like I said thats not the reason I bought the Chevy. I can't wait to test drive a new ford.

Have you guys seen this yet?

560 ft lbs/torque at 2000 rpm.

Beside taking part in driving the new 2003 Ford, Chev, Dodge at the Ford proving ground a month ago,I watched a Live comparison between the equivalent trucks by Ford ,Chev,& Dodge based upon a 10,000 Lb load.

The Ford WoN in every category.

The Chev came in 2nd in 6 different tests.

An over head cam all aluminum 460 or 427 would be cool. There are already 2 manufacturers out there making 427 aluminum blocks. The possibilities are endless.

As far as diesels go, I'd take the dodge cummins HO any day.

As far as ford's current V8's, I really don't like them as muck as the old 5.0, 5.8 and 7.5 engines. What I would really like to see would be a new 460 that has been redeveloped ans engineered like the Vortec chevys and pushrods.

I have test driven a 96 F-250 with a 460 and a 2000 F-250 with a V10 and the 96 had more power than any other pickup I have ever driven besides my own. It took no time to hit 70MPH. Me and dad were in awe. The V10 was a brute but just didn't compare. The 460 may have been modded but it sure looked stock. No headers.
