My guess on the cracks is an improper fuel/air mixture causing a high temp flashpoint...if i had a further thought, it would be that there may be leaky valve seats allowing either extra air or extra fuel to pass causing a higher than normal detonation temp...therefore, the culprit could be corrected by having the heads planed and reported with larger valves and a port and polish job, of course, after you swap out the pistons and rings...ditto on the previous post about honing the cylinder walls to insure all are on a level playing field...
