I have a 2000 F150 4x4 and when you turn slightly, the rear end shutters just a little at a low speed. Runs perfect at 80 mph. I think maybe if it has a locker it is stuck b/c it only shakes slightly at a low "turning" speed, not driving straight the truck has....... 160000 miles
did ford have problems out of these year rear ends?
These trucks didn't come from the factory with a true locker. They either came with an open differential or a limited slip. Just for starters check to see if there is enough fluid in the rear end, simply pull the plug and put your finger in there, if you feel gear oil then you are fine in that aspect. The shakes may be because of your clutches or something else failing in your rearend, a bearing or something. Just for starters.
you may need to put some limited slip addative in the rear end.. your clutch could be dragging when you make turns at low speed.. you can get a 7 oz tube at Auto Zone-- its called friction modifier... suct out a few ounces of the gear lube, and add the new tube of modifier.
It's time to change it too. If you dont you will damage the gears and limited slip. It uses a synthetic lube and the differential cover is sealed with adhesive sealant. Use a suction gun and remove about a quart of the fluid then add a quart of diesel. Jack the axle up so the tires spin and rotate the wheels to work the diesel in and loosen any deposits. Pop the cover off and drain then replace and fill.
I do mine every 50,000 miles and you'd be suprised to see how much crap works its way in there. I don't recommend using the sealant when you button it back up. Take the cover with you to autozone or your local rubber and gasket material dealer and get a sheet of material and cut a gasket out of it. I use the blue plastic stuff.
Also while you are working on the rear end you should take the time to purge the brake system.
I'll second what Steve said.....I had this same issue with my 01. The specs call for 4oz of friction modifier....I had to put a little bit more in mine to make it "shut up""!! Been smooth ever since then..that was about 20k ago
