On a total resto of my 66 F-100 short box 4 wheel drive with 300 cu in engine the VIN plate on the driver door was removed and lost. According to my service manual the frame location of the VIN is right frame side rail 24" forward of No. 2 crossmember. It does not say inner or outer side and if location is different for 4 whl drive. Can some one clear this up for me?
It is on the top of the rail, right where the manual says it will be.
Use a wire brush if needed, but do not use a grinder! The numbers are not stamped very deeply and a grinder will remove them.
Thanks banjopicker: The bad news is when the shop reinstalled the engine with a header the siderail was modified for header clearance. And of course that is where the VIN number was located. Well maybe the State Patrol will go easy on me. Thanks again
The sandpaper is marking where I found my 1966 swb 2wd VIN. Note that the front most VIN is behind the crossmember. This is not where the manual says it should be. I add this because I racked my brain looking for it in front of the crossmember. Good luck
not sure why the pic is so small. There is a better view in my gallery
There is usually another stamping on the same side rail, but it is under the cab.
You'll need a mirror to see it though!
Work on cleaning that area out, and they may be able to see it.
I bought my Slick in SC, and moved to Tacoma, and had to go through their VIN inspection - which experience gave me the reason to insist that a frame swap will get you into more trouble than it solves.
Carras' picture places the front one correctly, two feet in front of second crossmember - check his gallery, it is quite good.
His picture shows the #2 crossmember removed. It is the one that is normally bolted to the the I-beam mount points on the frame to stabilize and stiffen it all.
You are quite welcome.
That's what this board is all about.
By the way - what power plant required cutting the frame?
My 460 didn't even require modifications like that!
It is a 300cu in inline six. We installed a Clifford 4 bbl intake with a Hooker Header. A Clifford header may have not needed the cut out but at the time nothing was available thru them.
