Unhappy Instrument Panel

Just got my 86 Bronco and been busy last two days fixing one problem after the other. Now, my instrument panel is totally black...all the lights are not working. Fuse which is rated 5A keeps blowing. Other than a bad headlight switch with the variable resistor (dim the instrument panel lights), is there anything else?

Just a thought! How can you tap power from a 10A, 15A fuse or from an extra slot on the fuse box and turn it into a 5A current? If it's doable, I'll run this new source of power and connect it to one end or wire on the fuse box (wire leading to the instrument panel lights). This way, I don't have to trace and isolate the bad wiring from the fuse panel back to the headlight switch and into the battery or whatever is in between. My parking and headlights are working fine. Believe all the instrument panel light bulbs run at 12V, but require a lot less current.

The fuse doesn't regulate the current that the circuit pulls - it just limits it to a maximum by burning out. Routing power from another fuse will just tell you if the short in your dash lighting is capable of pulling more current than the larger fuse will pass. You need to find where the LB/R wire is shorted and insulate it there. It also goes to the headlight/wiper ***** area, the radio connector (which may have been cut off for an aftermarket radio, so that's a likely spot), the A/C control panel, ashtray, & rear defroster switch. Get a Haynes manual and look at the wiring diagrams.

Haynes it is...manual I bought is Chilton's and didn't have much stuff on wiring.

Just in case I can't isolate the short, my other plan is to use the power window source which is running at 5A (if there is one). My Bronco is an XLT with most of the options except "power window." One of the Chilton's pages showed my truck to have two 5A wirings (instrument panel and power window).
