my gauge would not show full for about 3 weeks. My fuel pump started making noise back in the summer the engine would miss and spit .I would turn it off for a while re start would run fine for maybe weeks then start missing a gain. ran codes said lean on left bank. still could not figure it out until today OUCH the fuel pump.
superdad, dont by the napa pump. get your pump from Ford. it will run you about the same amount but is better and more complete.
if your gauge isnt showing full that tends to mean the fuel sender or the float itself is bad.
my pump is loud also which is normal for these ford pumps. if you suspect the fuel pump to be a problem. be sure to replace the fuel filter and check the fuel pressure at the rail with a gauge first. anything under 39psi would be pump or filter related. anything above and you can figure the fuel pressure regulator is the issue which if it fails can cause to much fuel which in turn the computer will try to compensate and give a lean condition.
Mine has been loud since the day I got it. It is a getting a little more lube these days with the diesel running through it so it may last a long time.
I would not replace a fuel pump in one of these trucks until I diagnosed that the fuel pump was the problem. Replacing parts because some other guy's truck was doing something vaguely similar is like lighting money on fire.
The trucks runs fine. It's just that the pump is loud and the gauge is not acurate. I use to have Mud tires on the truck and I never really hear the pump before. But I just put some street tires on it and now I hear the pump running all the time. Maybe it's always been loud? LOL!
Fuel level sender is inside the tank.Check your connections clean as you can and add some dielectric grease.Grounding is sometimes a problem figure out a way to add a extra ground from tank to frame. I use the short lawnmower battery leads. If you have to go inside tank you might as well replace the pump.
Noise level is relative folks. If you are 17 and listening to the newest thing in music, its not loud. If you are 50-75 hearing the 17 y/o's music from two or three cars back, its too loud.
If the silly thing is working, what difference does it make how loud you think it is? If it's not broken, why spend the money to "fix" it?
I simply don't understand the logic behind replacing something that is functioning properly. But that's me. If you are independently wealthy and have nothing better to buy, swap engines while you are at it... its gonna wear out sooner or later anyway.
