Leaving the bottom half of the air filter on and the air filter itself on, then when you get a carb back fire just put the top of the air filter on and smother the fire.
And have a fire ext handy or a wet towel works great.
Finally getting around to tuning the carb... Probably should have done it immediately after getting home from driving cross country a year ago. Dropped 5000 feet and it sure runs rich.
A couple of weeks ago I replaced the flywheel 79 150 302. What a PIA. Drove it on a trip 90 miles away with no issues. Came back and the wife drove it to the store then my 18 yr old son drove it to wherever 18 yr old kids go to. They both complained it was stalling out. Well they put it in the garage for me to look at. Told them I would tune it up (it's been several years but I only put about 3k per year on her). So anyway I get all the tune up stuff plugs, wires, dist cap, filters etc. I do all the work....remember they drove it to the garage I didn't hear it run. The stuff didn't look that bad but it has been several years... Fired it up, got a misfire, it ran on high idle but stalled on low idle. I found I had crossed #4 and 5 wires...corrected that...still stalled on low idle. Back to basic troubleshooting....carb junk, vaccum leaks, fuel pressure, timing??? The damn vaccum house had swelled up on the back of the carb going to the PCV valve and fell off the carb. New hose, 12 beers later, and my kid has disappeared with the truck before I could put the tools away. At least he helped me on the flywheel and did return my gas card after filling up the tank.

Those dash pads would still be an improvement over mine!
