I have a 99 V10 and on cold starts it revs high, 2000-2800 rpms. And sometimes (seems to have gotten worse) when I'm plowing when I go to shift from forward to reverse or vice versa the rpms will jump about 500 between shifts. Took it to the dealer and they said it needs new exhaust manifolds, decided to go with headers as it was much cheaper but they never showed up, so they just put the old manifolds back on.
Does it sound like it needs new manifolds or is it something else? And if so what brand headers/manifolds does everyone recommend?
I have noticed the 99 models have higher start up idle adders than most other newer models but that seems a little high.
I suggest checking for vacuum leaks and maybe pulling off throttle body and cleaning is really well, in front and behind blades. Also when checking for vacuum leaks look for vacuum hoses that are worn so bad that the vacuum pulls them closed during idle or almost closed. Clean the MAFsensor as well also.
Alright. There was a vaccum leak last year that I had fixed. I'll have the dealership check into it, (they can't seem to come up with anything.) Since I don't know where or how to go about doing it.
There were no vaccum leaks or worn hoses. Had them replace the IAC valve, clean the throttle body, and clean the MAF sensor. They started it this morning and it only went to 16-1700 rpms. Thanks fordmdb for your input, this forum rocks.
And the dealer tried telling me I needed headers...
