I have 460 in my bronco after the last mud race it has no oil but the motor is completly quite no knocking no lifter noise so I pulled the oil pressure fitting to see if it was the gauge but no oil came out w/ the engine running! so I pulled the pan expecting catastrophe but to my anguish found the bearings good oil pump in great shape I havent pulled the cam yet and was hoping not too oil pump driveshaft is good as is bottom of dist. any ideas before I pull it and put another one in. by the way motor only has 25 hrs on it and it spins fast (5900 rpm)
If it's running fine then it's not your cam or dist gear. (either of those would make it not run at all)
You might pull the oil pump off and apart to make sure the pressure relief valve isn't stuck open. Also to keep from destroying the motor do your testing by pulling the dist and using a drill spin the oil pump shaft somehow (I used a 1/4 drive extension with a 5/16 socket on the end and electrical tape it on, or buy a oil priming tool)
Also check your oil filter to make sure it's not plugged solid.
the loss of oil pressure was caused by 3 bent pushrods which then allowed the lifters to exit there perspective holes now that i have found the problem I am switching heads and need new pr's the block is a 73 and the heads are c9 using factory rockers does any one know the right lenght pr's for this combo and can I use 3/8 instead of 5/16 the cam is a comp extreme energy dont remember the specs but its pretty good sized and my valve springs are the ones comp said to use w it
