Brake Drum Retainers ?

I had to destroy (break) the thin metal washer like brake drum retainers when removing the drums for brake inspection.

I believe their presence is to keep the drums snug when you pull the wheels.

Are they really necessary? Do they have to be there?

After all, the lug nuts are what really holds the wheels and brake drums to the hub. Along with the rust that is usually present! :-)

No you don`t really need them. I have done without them many times.
The only thing is that the next time you take the wheel off the drum might come off with it.

The clips are installed at the factory to keep the drums on the vehicle while it's moving down the assembly line. They are not needed and it's a good thing because it's impossible to get them off without destroying them.
