Guys
what would cause my trailer brakes to lock up? On the electronic controller in the cab, the sensitivity and voltage controls are set exactly 1/2way, I backed them DOWN some but I still hear the brakes lock coming to a swift stop. SHould I continue to back the controls down some more? FYI, i have the drawtite Activator controller. Anyone have ideas? Thanks
regards
Ben
Could be lots of things, but usually it is an improperly adjusted controller.
Don't know the model and stype you have, but in general they need to be leveled(this affects everything else) and then the gain and I think timing need to be adjusted.
Best bet is to look at the manual. Mine is a Tekonsha, forget model but the two **** settings are fairly low. Note that the settings will change with road conditions. I like to set mine to where the brakes just barely lockup on a hard stop on dry pavement, but this changes in rain etc.
I use a Tekonsha Prodigy with my travel trailer and it beat the Kelsey/Hayes controller I had hands down! With the Prodigy, set it up one time and no other adjustments are needed. It senses how quickly the truck is stopping and applies the appropriate amount of trailer brakes. No more adjusting for city/highway and wet/dry! After stopping, the amount of current running to the brakes is reduced to 25% to prevent overheating, etc.
I have the same brake contoller in my Power strokes. Mine are for 3 axle tailers. Get in gravle and set the brakes on 0. Then drive in the gravle and step on the brakes untill they lock up, then just back it off a little.
