Charging fluctuation.

Charging fluctuation.
This is a new one to me.
On my way to work this morning I notice my headlights going dim-bright-dim-bright, took me a second to notice my AMP guage fluctuating as well. Turned off the radio and defroster, still fluctuating. Noticed it would bounce a while then pause on the low side, where it sits right after startup, and then go up to normal and pause, then start bouncing again. Got off the freeway and all was normal untill I get to about 2000rpm, then it fluctuates again.
Any guesses?
I'm thinking I've got an alternator going out, but not sure.
Could this be a GPR issue?

Mine and my sons did that right before it started overcharging and fried the alternator. It was something inside the alternator. We had both of them rebuilt and new brushes and regulators put on but the shop still ended up having to replace the alternator. They said the windings had shorted.

Update.
Got home today and pulled the Alternator. The local NAPA had one of their "pro series" re-mans on the shelf, lucked out (NAPA part number NAE66249). While I was there they tested mine and the diagnostic machine said it was good. I still went with the new one. Got it in, cleaned up the battery contacts while I had them off and took it for a test drive with the lights on, heater fan at full and the radio on, so far so good, not even a wiggle. Needle sits on the high side of "M" in NORMAL on the guage.
