Question 3rd Brake Light

I just purchased a 1998 Ford Ranger. Flareside. 5 speed. Its an XLT. It came with a Leer canopy on it. The problem I am having is that the 3rd brake light doesn't work. Not on the canopy or even on the cab of the truck. I didn't notice if it was working at the dealership when I bought it. Most likely it wasn't. But does anyone know anything about this? I'm not sure if its wiring or if its a switch box or not. How would I find this information out? I'm also looking for a right tail light lens for this truck. I didn't really want to go to Ford and get it. Been watching the junkyards with no luck as of yet. Anyone know where I can a lens for cheaper than Ford? Thanks in advance.

You might try the website www.autobodypartsonline.com for the tail light. I got one from them a few months ago. Good price, shipped right to my door.

Most of the time they will disconnect the original 3rd light and and have the one on the cap function. I would check the connection to the caps light.

You may find a tail light on ebay.

3rd Brake Light

Thank you guys for your replies. As for the light on the canopy. It doesn't work either. I haven't hooked up a meter to check to see if it gets any juice yet. I wanted to know what the heck I was doing before I stick my hands in places it shouldn't be. I know the brake light on the canopy are the LED's. There was a loose connection in a junction on the canopy that I fixed. I thought that this would correct the problem. But it didn't. I'll hook up a meter before my next reply to see if there isn't any juice. Again thanks guys. I was about ready to shoot the dang light.

3rd Brake Light

I have a 98 ranger that I recently bought. I had a leer 100xlt put on it. When I bought my truck, my 3rd brakelight didn't work either, but it was most likely just the bulb, didn't matter to me since I was planning on putting a canopy on. Anyway, when they put the canopy on, they wired the LED brakelight to the drivers side brakelight. Try taking out your left taillight and see if there any wires connected to the factory wiring. The ran the wire through a hole in the truck bed, under the rail, and then into the canopy's wiring. Yours could be wired differently, or to the right side or whatever. One of the connectors could have come loose or something, just follow the wires. Good luck,

Cool 3rd Brake Light

Brian,

Thanks for the reply. I'll start to track that down. They have ran the wires up from the truck bed on the left side about right where the wheel well is at. Is it still raining in Lincoln City? I was going to either move there or Depoe Bay this last winter. The rain chased that idea away. Thanks
