Exhaust manifold and exhaust quoted $2300?

There actually is one good reason to not get longtube headers - they are illegal in all 50 states. Your state might not check for them yet but stick around - they might in the future.

I disagree with you...if they have the CARB number, they are legal. I have a set of JBA long tubes on my Mustang in Ohio and they have the CARB plate welded near the collector.

ppfftt. If youre gonna spend that much you might as well go all the way and get some longtube headers

I won't buy Hedman headers, I have seen too many with defects, espacially pin holes in the welds.
I have JBA headers on my 65 Mustang and I would buy them again. They are made very well.
I still think that if the truck is completely stock, there is not much point in worrying about headers.

Thanks for all the replies. To answer a few questions, this is an independent exhaust show thats been there 15 years, they are among the highest rated around for quality work. I have dealt with them before and they have been reasonable. The parts arn't where the cost is, its the labor. I think I may try doing the headers myself.
If its the smog tube and valves what would I look for? Ive done body, frame, suspension, and driveline work but never engine work more than plugs wires and external accesories. Are there any special tools that will make life easier when doing the headers?

Coincidentally though, they were headmans, and they were a somewhat mediocre header, not bad, but not great.

Gonna have to disagree here, I had the the exhaust rust off of my last truck, so I put long tube headers and 2.5" duals on all the way back (2x flowmaster 40 series). That was the first mod that was done to that truck, everything else was stock. That was a great bang for buck ratio, wonderful. If you have to change the exhaust anyway, it's essentially free.

When I fix something I like to fix it and move on to something else and not have to deal with it again. With an old part put back in place it's more likely to happen again.
I had this happen on an 89 Bronco I had, so I tossed a set of long tubes on it with 2 chamber flows. It sounded really good.
