Dont know to much about it, but would like to hear peoples thoughts/ideas/pictures whatever, im going to be painting my frame this summer, and would like to beef it up a little, what do you guys think about boxing a frame?
I think it depends alot on what your doing with your truck. You gotta be careful, when you strengthen one part, it puts more stress on other parts that might not be as strong.
Its an idea that iv been playing with a little, but i use my truck for work and heavy loads, and have yet to be concerned with frame strength and mine is a 1/2 ton frame.
It will also make it rie rougher as there wont be as mush flex in the frame to absorb big bumps.
i'm just worried that once i grind down the rust there wont be much left to the frame, and i dont use it for to much work, just a lil mud-ridin here and there
Lol surface rust never hurt anyone. Wire brush on a grinder will do some good if your looking to clean it up a bit. But painting it is such a mall crawler thing to do. :P
If I was going to box it, I would only do the front and rear of the frame. Once you start welding and drilling the flanges, you can seriously weaken a frame, especially if you do it near the rear wheels/hump.
A F-250 frame should be about 1/4" anyways, that is pretty sturdy.
In my opinion it all depends on the trucks final usage. My 79 is plated from the front of the frame to the end of the cab. I'm not sure I will take it all the way to the rear or not at this point. My reasoning was more towards the mounting of my front links and trans crossmember. Right now I am thinking of beefing up the factory crossmembers for the rear section. Mainly the rear and the third one connecting both front of rear leaf hangers. If you want a pict of what I got so far I can post one up later
let me guess the bfg at's make it a mall crawler right? ahaha
it makes it Xtr3me!
Most trucks dont NEED a boxed frame and it only adds weight.
I know of a 93 F150 with 2500hp that has the stock frame drilled with 3" hole saws so much it looks like swiss cheese. Frames are much stronger than you think.
Yeah, but it drives 200' at a time. It depends on use of the truck..
and I painted my bronco frame, is my bronco a mall crawler prozon? Preventive maintenance ftw. Keeps rust away and makes cleaning it easier. Either way, a stock truck on 33's doesn't need a boxed frame.
No, you put about 12 coats of POR15 on your frame. Ive got to chip this chit off the 70 with a sledge hammer and pickaxe. It'll look better pink anyway.
