Just wondering if there is anybody who can help me?
I have an opportunity to buy a completely redone 1979 F150 4x4 Auto, but they are taking out the 390 that is in it. I currently drive a 1989 F250 w/ a 302, auto.
Will the 302 bolt up alright with the 79 tranny??
Thank you in advance for anything you can tell me.
so, it is possible to use a different bellhousing and use my 302? I am really green when it comes to this stuff, so if anybody knows off of the top of their heads what a list of engines that could be fit up to that engine would be, please post it. Thanks again.
No you cant change the bell housing because it is an automatic and they are one piece. You either need the same motor thats in it or diferent transmision to match the motor you want.
Likely, the guy doesnt know what he is talking about.
A 302 in a beast this heavy is going to suck, a 351 barely cuts it. I have never seen a 302 swapped into a 77-79 4x4, because its alot of work, i dont see how it will fit because the NP 205 transfercase is married to the C6 auto, and the 302 wont bolt up to the C6. forget this idea. Go find a 460 to bolt in, you will get roughly the same mpg, and better performance all around. you will need the motor swap mounts available from several sources.
351m, 400, 429, 460 bolt all bolt to the C6 auto.
Confirm what transmission is in there, then go find an engine.
If you can go look at the engine the easiest way to tell if it is a 360/390 is to look at the sparkplugs. The front two point to the rear and the back to point two the front. If it is a 390 then you could find a 360 or a 352 farely easy/cheap to put in it.

Reason: typo
It's not possible to change bellhousings for a C-6 because it's one piece. The pattern is the same for all FE engines (332, 352, 360, 390 and others). The 302, 351W, and 351C are unique as are the 351M, 400, 429, 460.
There are a few C-6s out there that will fit a 302, but they are rare.
I think I get the picture now, I have looked and found several 390 and 460 engines not too far from home listed for sale. I will go that route, might also make the truck more desirable when i'm done with it anyway.
