Belts

This past weekend I changed both belts on my 3.0 because the power steering belt was squealing. I checked my log book and I had changed both belts 4 years and about 40k ago. I put gates on last time and this time again.

Is 4 years about as good as they are quiet for? Or are there any other brands I should try in the future?

I used Goodyear Gatorback belts on a couple of my cars that last time I had to change the belts. They cost more, but are supposed to stay quieter and more flexible for longer. Of course, these are serpentine belts, not V-belts like yours. My problem is that I sometimes leave my cars sitting for a couple of months, and the old belts got stiff just sitting there in one position, and cracked. I've only had the new belts for a couple years, so I don't have long term experience yet.

Your situation is not unusual. Gates is a good brand. Goodyear is better, but not by a huge amount. Both brands are excellent and in terms of time will last about the same. Rubber does get old and looses it's flexibility. Mine hold up longer than that in mileage but I only get a couple years out of them.

I'd say 5 years or 60,000 miles is about what you can expect from a good top brand belt.
