what year did the 302 water pump change? I have an '89 (and '87) 302 that have identical water pumps and timing covers ('89, out of a F150 is the build motor, '87 out of a F250 is for spare parts).. but I bought a RACE gasket set for '72-'87 260/289/302 and the water pump gasket does not match the water pump (so far all other gaskets I've needed out of the set have matched, incl. the timing cover) ..
even the gasket that came with the water pump is not a match, but the pump matches both the '89 and '87 (can't figure that one out?) .. just wanna be sure I know what I need when I head to the parts store ..
take your water pump or the old gasket with you to the parts store and match them there. It's the only real sure fire way to get the right gasket in one trip. Once you find the right gasket write the part number down for next time. I have run into capability issues before so I keep a cheap $5 flash drive in each of my vehicles with an excel spread sheet of the Parts, Part numbers, Date bought/replaced, and Price...
well if you like that idea you might also try scanning in your reciepts from the part store... I go to O'Reilly's a lot for my parts but have found that over time the ink disappears off the reciept... So those life time parts aren't so lifetime anymore... I also have a column for the phone number or email that is registered to the warrenty, and a column for the file name of the scanned reciept... This way I always have the reciepts and warrenty information and dates I need if a part has to be replaced... This also helps keep a maintence log of the parts that you have done on each vehicle so you know when spark plugs, breaks and other wear items should be checked and replaced.
Doing this kind of record keeping has saved me tons of money! Not replacing things too soon or actually being able to warrenty out parts!
best source for parts locally is an autozone, they can bring up a complete purchaser log of everything I bought over the years just with a phone number or CC (helps to always use the same card I guess) ..
I keep the excel sheet so I can print a copy before I sell a vehicle. Gives the new owner something to work off of, and helps diagnosing problems if you already know what has been done in the last few years... I have 4 trucks all 88-91's so it's hard to remember which one had what done sometimes...
The older gasket set is likely for a standard rotation water pump. Both of your truck water pumps are reverse rotation water pumps, used in serpentine belt systems.

Some time in the mid-late 80s is when Ford changed this.
