Automatic or standard?
A few weeks ago, just as my winter break off from college was wrapping up, I was finishing up a project redoing the engine in my truck, and unfortunately as I was finishing it up and testing it, something in the transmission (still haven't figured out what it was) went bad.
The bad tranny that's in the truck right now is a C6. The truck is a 79 150 4X4 with a 400. When I bought the truck, sitting in the bed, was some kind of Ford manual tranny (I assume a 4 speed, but if anyone knows how to tell that'd be great).
The body of the truck was originally from a manual transmission truck, so the 4WD shifter is in a big floor patch panel where the shifter used to go, and there is a patch where the clutch pedal used to be too.
My question is, since I have to remove the C6 and do a bunch of work on it and the truck either way, and I keep having thoughs that a standard would be really cool, which would you guys reccomend I do? Upgraded parts and a rebuild kit would be at least a few hundred for my C6, and that's if the torque converter isn't bad, but for the manual I'd have to buy and put on the entire clutch, and then what's the linkage to the pedal like?
Let me know what you guys think about each option, Thanks, AleX
All the time you can read ads for Dents and others that has a "rebuilt
transmission", many times before the engine is rebuilt. No mention of
what type. You know what type! LOL :)
Owned mine 35 years yesterday and it's never broke down and left
me stranded anywhere -ever-!

Gears and FE's sound cool on their own. :)

My Dent has the bigger brake pedal, didn't see why the '91 Bronco
couldn't too. The '90 F250 parts truck came with the one marked
"MAN TRAN" and the A/T Bronco came with the big one. I peened
it into place and scanned-off a picture just before welding it.
ppps- Yes, we -are- talking about Ford's here, so the parts don't
interchange worth a hoot. LOL :) Lever and all is different between
the two assemblies on the ~'90s models at least.

As to what kind of tranny, I'm assuming you know that it is a 4 speed for sure.
A Borg-Warner t18 will have BorgXWarner stamped on the left side I believe and will have a sloped belly.
A New Process 435 will have a flat belly and will be made of aluminum case.

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
In the end it will come down to mostly cost and time, which is cost for me, because I can only work in the summer and this truck is my car, but I wanted to see if there was any real bias towards autos in these trucks, and if there was a real feasbale way for me to do this.
Thanks guys, I'll let everybody know what's going on, probably when I screw up something else as soon as I get the transmission working.

If all a guy wants to do is, get from point-A to point-B, as
quick and easy as he can, the automatic is the way to go! :)
Other than that, the manual's got it beat. ;)

The only negative is that your gal can't really sit next to you with twin sticks btwn her legs. Actually, she can but she really shouldn't be entertained that way IMO.
