I'm trying to get away from this blasted 3 gear trans...im wondering what would be cheaper...4 spd or 5 spd trans...and what all is involved in getting the trans to bolt up to my 83 f-350..with a 351W
4 speed will be cheaper, because nobody wants to swap them in. The big thing now is overdrive, and really the only tranny you can swap in a f350 that has overdrive is a zf 5 speed. It will give you a overdrive for good highway cruising. A 4 speed will only give you a 1 to 1 ratio in high gear, the same as you have now, I am assuming you have a c6. You can swap in a 4 speed manual, but if you are going to the trouble, I would swap the 5 speed in.
i agree with Franklin2,don't put in the srod trans(4 speed od trans)it's great for commuting, but sucks if you have to haul or tow anything,it won't hold up.Ford doesn't recommend towing with this trans.it's great in my dd,but any hauling i have to do,i do with my f250.IMO

All the truck 5 speeds are hydraulic clutch, no getting around it.
you could always put a t5 out of a mustang, but they are cable clutch.some one on here did the conversion can't remember who though.i think they converted to hydraulic.
whats wrong with hydraulic clutch? they are low maintenance,no adjusting.
probably a ton cheaper, and the weak fire-wall issue with the low 80's year that i heard about
I think ford still sells the reinforcement kit for the weak fire wall.hydro IMO is just simpler and easier.and those kits are cheap as well.so why not go with hydralic?
Interesting seeing the firewall reinforcement kit still being mentioned. My father was a Ford truck mechanic back in the early 80's, and made his own firewall repair kit, prior to Ford copying it, and selling it over the counter. Too bad they never gave him more than an "Attaboy" for the template........

Correct me if I am wrong but the 351C will not bolt up to a 5spd from a 302 becuase they were all the bellhousing for the 302,289,351W bellhousing and the cleveland is a different bellhousing all together.

You are wrong. 351C uses the small block (windsor series) pattern, while the 351M/400 uses the 429/460 pattern.
