My 2001 ford F150 with the 5.4 triton, had an oil pump failure last week & I'm considering rebuilding this block. I know this engine is a newer style block as opposed to the 80's models that i have rebuilt in the past. Can any one tell me anthing that i might consider upon embarking on this project? I'd be greatful for any type of rebuilding info for this block, as the haynes manual is just basic as possible. Things like web adresses to good suppliers of these 5.4 engine parts, and little known or helpful facts in removing, rebuilding and installing this engine would also be great.........thnxs guyz!
these are wayy different then older engines. these are OHC engines with a long a$$ timing chain that runs up and down both banks from crank to valves. i know how to rebuild an older motor, but when mine dies im probably going to have a shop do it rather then mess with all these newfangled components.
Tear it down before you buy any parts, since you may prefer to get a remanned or used engine if you find major damage.
Get a real Ford manual, which is cheap compared to what the rebuild will cost.
I appreciate it guys, been busy last few days.........been doing some research on this engine.........havnt pulled the engine yet........im wonderin tho ( if d damage is minimum) will rebuilding be cheaper than a used or rebuilt one($1500 & up)? Ofcourse that depends on the severity of the internal damage............
I just spent 5 minutes, found a used engine at a yard that ships. $1000 plus shipping with a warranty with less than 100k on it. This is an option I've taken in the past, and its hard to pass up.... Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market
Redwood,u spend 5 min n found this ........and i spend 4 hrs. searchn and some how i kept endn up wit nutthin........
thanks (for that link)....this is some good stuff!!
maybe i'll find somethin reasonable in Jackson or Laurel.......(just in case if I dont rebuild)..again I appreciate it ,thnks.
I'm not discouraging a rebuild, and I haven't tried to rebuild a modular motor, but I've heard they don't lend themselves well to it. Costs can go up to the point its better to get a reman or crate motor. If you're looking to keep cost and time down, then a used motor is the way to go.
If you can find an engine for around $800 to $1000, shipping will be around $200 or so, and you'll still be under cost compared to local yards. Plus you avoid the core charge, and you can shop for a solid warranty. The other upside is having your old engine to play with and see what makes it tick when it's all over. Just make sure you get a good warranty and ask 'em a couple of times if they pull with wrenches or cutting torches. The best motors will be pulled with wrenches and the yard won't be afraid to back 'em with a warranty. Also inquire as to how the truck it comes out of was wrecked.
If you've got VIN code L for your engine code, then check to see if you've got the EGR on the upper right of the motor. This engine is sold with and without. It makes an easier swap to get like for like if you can, and its also easier to get the motor out of a truck rather than a van.
Here's the 5 minute motor I found, but you can shop around and very likely get a better deal:

When you get ready to pull it out, holler at me. That's a WHOLE 'nother essay in itself. It's do-able, but its kind of a pain that first time out....
yeah the more I learn.......a donor engine seems to be the best way to go.....yeah that web site is pretty awesome..... did you ever purchase a block through this site's info?.....(redwood)......O yeah and jst 4 the record If u know where Sela Ward is frm.... then that's where I'm Frm...
I've purchased 2 through 2 different yards I pulled from that site. The most expensive was $1250 to the door with 113k on it, and the other was $1025 with 54k. I've already checked both of those yards and they don't have any available.
I'm in Meridian just about every week. I've got 3 telecom sites I maintain over there. It's about 60 miles east of where I live.....
