I have a 03 Ranger and today when slowing down to stop at a stop light my speedometer started jumping up and down from 0-15 MPH. As soon as I took my foot of the brake it stopped. It occurred about 4 more times on the same trip but it only seemed to happen when I was putting my foot on that brake. Any ideas?
I am having no problems to speak of beyond that and a rough idle occasionally. No cruise control, no ABS problems, I have a 3.0 V6, an auto tranny, I got about 87 k on it and no mods. I am not sure what a driveline combo is to be honest.
It started up yesterday out of the blue. I spoke to a mechanic buddy of mine and the first thing he asked is "is it a ford?" I replied yes and he said the odds are it is the engine idle fan and just to knock on it a few times and it usually straightens everything out. Low and behold it worked.

This is pretty much your
driveline combo.
Only other thing to mention - is it 2WD or 4WD?

My truck's done this multiple times, and I've had it checked out at Schucks and Napa, and it turns out that my speedometer cable was just out of tune, I guess if its the manual kind (not electric) you can use a flathead or somethin' to retune it and fix your speedo?... There's a cable in your transmission that I'm referring to, and I believe that this happens when it's Loose. If you have an electrical speedo, that could get expensive...
